While this is no silly romance, it is also not weighed down by the characters' depressing self-loathing or ennui. The characters grow because the author makes them do so. Tristan learns to truly love and understand himself and even his grandmother overcomes her fears.

Written against a backdrop of political intrigue that is not too complex to understand and does not overwhelm the romance, the hero and heroine, Tristan and Zosia, learn how unselfish love in all its forms is. Tristan, as scarred and broken as he is, is more than a hero, he's a man. He's a passionate, handsome man who finds his salvation, not just in the love of Zosia, but also when he learns to love himself. Zosia is ahead of Tristan in self-acceptance and she is equally as passionate as he is. She longs for a free Poland and is willing to sacrifice for her people, but she also learns of love outside of politics. Her feelings for Tristan are real and just as fierce as his are for her.

What I like is that Marvelle creates characters that are memorable because they seem so real. She makes the attraction and passion between Tristan and Zosia obvious so that when they declare their love, it feels genuine. The romance of the story is funny, warm, heartbreaking and touching throughout. This is a novel without fat. You won't find yourself skipping paragraphs or pages; it is that good.

This is a beautiful love story that keeps afresh all our romantic ideas about love and passion.

The Perfect Scandal The Scandal Series Delilah Marvelle 9780373775545 Books Reviews

The creation of Zosia from historical characters and events was cleverly done and the historical context of the story was excellent, because it was uncommon for romances I like to read.

In the beginning, this book intrigued me due to Tristan’s unique psychological problem which first arose under traumatic, tragic circumstances - all realistic. He also had unique sexual needs as a result. No other historical romance novel I know addresses his habits, so for me the story-line was unique. His character seemed strong and noble. Zosia’s background and circumstances were unique to me too. She had a particularly unusual physical attribute caused by a traumatic event in her life. I thought the author would explore all Tristan and Zosia’s psychological complexities fully.

Unfortunately, before the half way mark, the book took a different turn to the promise created in the beginning. The story became politics dominated and a strong, likeable secondary character assumed prime position in the story next to Zosia creating a diversion from the romance involving Tristan.

The downside for me was that the protagonists did not spend much time together, and the circumstances surrounding Zosia’s loss of virginity were unromantic to me. Later, Tristan made a major unilateral decision that took away Zosia’s freedom of choice. This shocked me and I became disillusioned with him. Consequently, their romance was ruined for me.

The political intrigue (although interesting), overwhelmed book time that should have been devoted to developing the romance, in my opinion.

Easy book to read
I admire the different angle taken in this book with an amputee princess and a self-harming aristocrat, as well as the fascinating historical backdrop of Poland and Russia pre-Revoultion, however somehow all these fantastic elements didn't really gel cohesively to be perfect. and scandal? not so much.
Is there some kind of romance trope where the able-bodied MC takes away the disabled MC's mobility aid (crutches in this case) and it's presented as a good thing - rather than abusive, which it really is? Because this is the second book where I've run across this and I am not impressed. I was enjoying the book until we hit that gross behavior. People with disabilities do not find it romantic or sexy to be restricted in their ability to get around.
Like the other two books in this series, I greatly enjoyed Delilah Marvelle's "The Perfect Scandal." Once again, the author has turned the traditional Regency romance on its head with fresh, intriguing characters and situations. The hero, Tristan, who appears briefly and affectingly in the prior book in the series ("Once Upon a Scandal") is one of her most likeable heroes yet, despite having a serious, potentially crippling, emotional problem to cope with. The heroine, Zosia, was enormously likeable and copes with her own difficulties, both physical and familial/political, with an aplomb that captivates the hero and makes him want to be a better person.

I loved the romance between these two; their initial flirtation had me laughing out loud, and by the end, I thoroughly believed these two were meant for each other and would be well-suited for a lifetime together.

Two minor complaints I thought Tristan's affliction should have caused him more trouble--he seems to shrug it off too easily. I expected at least one major incident, but it didn't happen. The other thing that puzzled me was how easily Zosia's other suitor, Maksim, gives up after finally getting a chance to win her. He bows out so gracefully and quickly that I found his behavior implausible, given all the build-up that came before (the many years he searched for her). I think it would have upped the ante at the end of the book if Maksim had persisted in trying to win her while she and Moreland were apart. There's a brief passage where he pushes a little, but then he gives in and it becomes a non-issue. However, neither issue detracted from my enjoyment of the book; I just thought these were both places where the author could have ramped up the conflicts for the characters and thus pushed the emotional intensity of the book even further.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book. I liked the characters and the far-ranging story. I learned a lot about Russian and Polish history and enjoyed the descriptions of the Russian court; it was fun to read a Regency not set entirely in England. An excellent end to an excellent series! I look forward to Ms. Marvelle's next series.
