This is my first book by this author and I am sooo loving it. A friend recommended it and I thought why not, it's different than what I normally read so we read it together.OK first off it wasn't until the hero mentioned that he served in I think Vietnam or something that I even realized that this book was NOT set in current times. I kept wondering why they didn't just whip out there cells and call each other. I also noticed that someone had paged someone else. I'm not young, I'm in my late 30's but still I had no idea why, to me they just weren't communicating with each other. OK with that said at least you will go into this book knowing that this takes place in probably the late 80's early 90's I don't believe a time frame was specifically mentioned. But once I realized this, it made some of the comments and actions make a little more sense to me.
Secondly the writing of this author was fantastic. She really explained everything in a very plausible way. When I read the synopsis on this book my first thought was how can she not tell him who she really is, I didn't see how that was going to work. But the author made it work so flawlessly it was fantastic. I was constantly on my toes wondering, who done it, and where is this going to go next, and how are they going to fix that one. The secondaries were so engrossing, I fell in love with them and it pained me when something would happen to one of them. I love to guess and make my theories about the ending of the book, it's fun for me, but the author gave you so many characters to really ponder about and question that it wasn't until the big reveal at the end of the book that it all came out. I had my thoughts but really the book held you captive the entire time. This book was tough to put down I had to know what was going to happen next.
I enjoyed this book so much that I've recommended it to just about everyone I talk books with, this really is a book for everyone. I really endeared myself to the characters and the ending was fantastic, it really left you with a feel good feeling, a true HEA! I plan to read more from this author.

Imagine that two young and similar looking lovely women, one with her daughter, board a plane and sit in the same row. The mother, Carole takes the window seat that was meant for the other woman, with the child in the centre seat. The plane crashes and the other woman, Avery, saves the child but the mother is killed and burnt beyond recognition. Sounds reasonable so far?
The surviving woman is badly burnt, can't talk or move because she is totally bandaged except one eye. The husband, Tate, an aspiring US senate candidate, finds a plastic surgeon who tells him he can recreate her burnt and disfigured face back to her normal looks in one operation. Despite an impending breakdown in his marriage he stays near her during her recovery. Does that seem reasonable?
While she is incapacitated Avery is visited by an unknown family member who whispers in her ear that their plans to kill Tate on election day are unaltered. Avery is very scared as she has become attached to Tate during her recovery. Does that seem reasonable?
After she recovers, Avery is immediately accepted by all of the extended family as Carole, Tate's bitchy and promiscuous wife. Tate also accepts her as Carole, despite a huge change in her character and many obvious discrepancies. Despite this his caring time ends when he tells her that the marriage is still over as soon as the election is held. Does that seem reasonable or just plain implausible?
While IMHO the plot was just plain implausible, Sandra Brown's writing skills made a ridiculous plot readable and enjoyable. It was only these skills that kept my star rating at the OK level.
This is one of Brown's early works (1990) that are now being released on for the first time.
MIRROR IMAGE by Sandra Brown. The story starts with a horrific plane crash on takeoff. Avery Dianels, a broadcast journalist, is seated next to 3-year-old Mandy Rutledge and her mother, Carol Rutledge. Carol dies on impact. In spite of burns and other severe injuries, Avery grabs Mandy and whisks her to safety. Because of Avery’s extensive facial injuries and her inability to communicate, everyone assumes that Avery is Carol Rutledge, a person not well liked even within her own family. So begins the lengthy plastic surgery makeover to turn Avery’s face into Carol’s. Oh, by the way, the extended Rutledge family is in the midst of a political campaign to get Carol’s husband, Tate, elected to the United States Senate from Texas. Through the long process of physically changing Avery to Carol, Avery falls in love with Tate and his daughter Mandy. FeeIing comfortable in her role as Carol Rutledge, she senses someone within the family is out to kill Tate once he is elected.
I thought the plot was interesting although variations of it have been done over the years. Brown develops her characters well. The story has intrigue and constantly changes course. I have read more than two dozen Sandra Brown books and find Mirror Image to be one of her best. I give the book a strong 5-star rating.
I recently went on a Sandra Brown binge and read several of her novels in a row while I was on vacation. I literally needed something that was engrossing but not challenging to read on the beach. Most of the novels fit the bill perfectly -- she follows something of a formula with every story sharing similar plot elements and character types (which is particularly glaring when read back to back) but that's OK because she does it well. However, when I got to this one, I have to say I was incredibly disappointed. While some of Ms. Brown's plots are far-fetched, she usually does a good job getting the reader to suspend the necessary disbelief. Not so in this case. Not only is the premise preposterous, the character motivations are naive, silly and completely asinine. I do not like the main character at all -- she is annoying and stupid. Not at all like the strong, intelligent women that usually populate Ms. Brown's novels. I just can't get my head around this plot at all -- sure it's intriguing, but I don't buy it and it's ruined my enjoyment of the novel.
